An unvaccinated family cat has died of rabies in Sonoma county. The cat was showing strange behavior and being aggressive towards family members, apparently biting them as well, when it was taken to the family veterinarian. The veterinarian and county officials determined that the cat was positive for rabies. Several other pets as well as all exposed individuals are now undergoing post exposure treatment.
Rabies is endemic in the bat, fox and wildlife population throughout California. It is highly recommended that all cats be vaccinated regardless of whether they are "indoor only" to prevent possible exposure. State law requires all dogs over four months of age to be vaccinated for rabies.
