Veterinary Emergency Services:

When your family veterinarian is not available or something happens on a holiday, week-end or at night, there are hospitals that specialize in urgent and emergency care.

Generally, your family veterinarian will have the number and location of where they refer emergencies to on their answering machine.

Urgent care and emergency practices are staffed and equipped to handle all kinds of emergencies including traumas, poisonings, snake envenomations, and serious illnesses. Urgent care and emergency facilities work in conjunction with your family veterinarian in the local area and have established a professional relation between the practices.

If you are not sure if your pet needs to be taken to the urgent care or emergency facility, then the best way to find out is to give them a call and talk to a staff member to get advice.

Although some emergency hospitals are open 24 hours, others are open evenings until morning and 24 hours on weekends. It is a good idea to be prepared. Note the office hours of your veterinarian and know the location and operating hours of your preferred emergency hospital.
